With some modification, could the Collections System be used as a Company or Vendor Directory? Not necessarily for items or products, but company profiles.

The Collections app does use custom fields but it depends on what features you want in the directory. There are categories, custom fields and the ability to change the language files but is that enough for you? I can setup a demo if you want to try it out? If you need something purpose built, there is a company directory application here.
