Install/Upgrade IPB 3.4 Hook With Files Guide

Guide to install or upgrade a DevFuse hook with files.

Other Guides: Install Application | Upgrade Application | Install/Upgrade Hook | Install Upgrade Hook With Files

This is a detailed tutorial on how to install or upgrade a hook with files. Usually a hook will only require you upload the hook file into IPB. But if the hook has extra files or folders to upload, you will need to upload these as well. For the purposes of this guide, I'll be using the Auto Birthday Greeter hook as an example. I've choosen this hook because it requires additional files to be uploaded along with the hook file. But these instructions can be used for other hooks with files. Obviously replacing the references to Auto Birthday Greeter to the other hooks name.

Requirements
  • Because these types of hooks require additional files be uploaded, you'll need an ftp program. A good free one is FileZilla.
  • The latest version of the IPB forum software is recommended.
  • Zip program to unzip the applications contents, most applications will be zipped. A good free one is 7-zip.
Step One
Download the hook and unzip it's contents into a folder on your desktop. Most hooks will have a basic folder structure like this. Where the hooks xml file is usually in the root folder along with the readme or instructions files. If your hook has an upload folder, it will usually indicate that the hook also requires files to be uploaded, if so check out the Install Hook With Files Guide.

Step Two
Open your ftp client, in this example we will be using FileZilla and connect to your site. Navigate the contents of the hooks upload folder. Now navigate to the root folder of your forum. And copy the contents of that upload folder over to your forums root folder like so.

Step Three
In your browser open up your Admin CP and navigate to the System Tab then on the left side menu locate the Applications & Modules block then click the Manage Hooks link. At the top of this page you will see the Install Hook button, click it and find the hooks xml file you need to import. Once your ready, click the Install button to start the import.

Final Step
Once you have finished all the above steps, you can now access your hook. Every hook is different but you should check if the hook has any settings or any other features it needs setup. They will typically be found in the following locations if your hook supports them.

Admin CP > System Tab > System Settings - If a hook adds settings, it will usually be in this location.
Admin CP > System Tab > Manage Hooks - Here you can manage your hooks position, disable or uninstall it.
