Would it be at all possible to set some Calendar Event topics to post on the date of the actual event as opposed to the date that they are posted to the calendar?
an option perhaps?

^^Yeah, i asked about this as well. Would be a very useful feature and it would make organizing events/stuff a lot more easy.

Not currently, the calendar hook needs to run for it to create the topic but as Breadfan mentioned, I've had this suggested before and it's a planned feature.
