In the contact system what I would like to do is mark a message as replied (etc) and that it drops off the active list but is still available to retieve. This would allow me to only have items that I need to action on the front page.

Already a planned feature, next version of Contact is really dependent on when I finish the Donation Tracker and the IPB 3.2 release date.
