Your not going to have as many options as with IPB 3.1.x. But here are a few mods that might help you slow the spam down.

I was able to implement a security challenge question and it solved it 100%
I used your system and modified for a security question...
If you use a dropdown box, they will get over it... it will only filter 20% of the bots...
